Vidya Balan was roped in as a producer for Raanjhanaa after she expressed interest in making a film on the topic of love marriage, which is tough to handle in our society. She thought that the story was really strong and it would be a successful venture.On the other hand, Sonam Kapoor, who is Sanjay Leela Bhansali's favourite heroine, wanted to work on his next film and for this she even started taking acting lessons from him. As soon as things fell into place, both of them were convinced that Raanjhanaa will be a successful venture and decided to go ahead with the project. Dhanush was approached to play the male lead in the movie and he gladly accepted to do so. The movie was officially launched on 21 September 2011. The shooting of the movie started in October 2011. The first schedule of the film was shot in Delhi and Mumbai, while the second one was in Kashmir. The third schedule of the movie was supposed to be shot in Bangkok but it was later cancelled due to creative differences between Bhansali and Dhanush.The principal photography of the movie ended on 6 January 2012.  Bhansali also announced that he would be coming up with a new adaptation of Romeo & Juliet which he had been planning for a long time now. The film was also rumoured to have been shelved as well as delayed due to financial problems but Bhansali later clarified that these were baseless rumours.
